Ferrari 612 Scaglietti Police Car
What's the Story
Well, truly driven by the UK’s finest, this was the lead car for the Baton Circuit of the UK to celebrate Ferrari’s 60th anniversary. Here the car was captured outside the Italian Embassy in London.
Clive’s 250 GTE (as far as we know the only other Ferrari model to be used as a police car in Italy) was invited to join the 59 other cars making up the meeting in St James’s Square. After refreshment in the RAC in Pall Mall (bought that once) and a reception at the Embassy this unbelievable police car escorted the cavalcade around Marble Arch, down Oxford Street and out along the M40 to Silverstone where the world wide baton charge reached it’s conclusion. The old 250 (chassis 2245) didn’t miss a beat, although a little blue exhaust smoke is now in evidence. Dicing with a wonderful 250 Zagato and the hugely famous blue SWB 250 lightweight and then to be passed by the howling Enzo and gorgeous F40’s made a bit of a boys drive for the 2 hours to Silverstone.
The police had blocked all the junctions in a busy central London to allow the cavalcade through. Masses of people on Oxford Street just gawked in bemusement and one frustrated taxi driver came up along side to politely ask what the f**k was going on. He was not happy!
The two pilots behind in the 360 bedecked with leather helmets however were singing ‘My Way’ so loud that they drowned out the thundering exhausts.
Let’s just say the whole event was magnificently organised by Ferrari UK and was a spirited driving experience!
