Classic Porsche 911 Turbo SWISSVAX

A classic car and a classic example of how time and sunlight can deteriorate paintwork. Add to that a period when lead issues were being addressed and reduced within paint and you’re left with an unstable base for all of that red pigment. I really had my work cut out to say the least, but the prospect of a difficult challenge has always excited me. I was keen to get started!

As we drove the 911 into the workshop underneath out lighting, I immediately realised there was more than just fading to contend with. Years of cleaning and abrasive polishes had resulted in thousands of swirl marks and scratches all of which would have to be dealt with to give the Carnauba wax coating the best possible base to adhere to.

Once washed and clay barred I set to work with the machine polisher carefully removing a few microns of the old faded paint layer and in turn clearing the scratches. A day later and it was ready for the cleaner fluid stage of the Swissvax process. This prepares and nourishes the paint surface prior to the wax coats. The first wax coat applied (Zuffenhausen) is specific to German paints and provides a fantastic depth of shine with 40% Carnauba. The second coat (Shield) contains PTFE (Teflon) which has a ‘non-stick’ effect to combat dirt, insects and salt. This in turn makes for a more durable coating and UV protection to help preserve the new layer of paint.

The end result was nothing short of spectacular and once all the trim had been restored to the same level she took pride of place in our workshop, possibly in the same way as she did all those years ago in the showroom.
